TRANSCRIPTIONS
Below you'll
find various transcriptions and pieces of notation which demonstrate
some of what I do in the studio and on stage. I hope you find them
interesting as well as challenging. If there are any drum parts from
other recordings that you'd like to see transcribed, drop me an e
mail and I'll do my best to get it on the site.
e mail ohmay@aol.com
and please include notes in the subject header.

After many requests, here's an explanation
and transcription of the 4:3 samba from the drum solo off of
'Time Machine' (Satriani) as well as my video clip segment from
Gary Chaffee's Instructional video. Basically what I've done
is set up a 3/4 samba ostinato with my kick and hi hat to solo
over. I then play a constant 2:3 accent with my left hand on
the snare. From there, I play the figures of 2 through 8 with
my right hand on the bell of the ride, against the accent of
2 on the snare, which is against the 3/4 samba. This gives me
a 2:2:3, 3:2:3, 4:2:3 (which is below), 5:2:3, 6:2:3, 7:2:3
and 8:2;3.

Here you have the 4:2 (ride & snare) against the 2:3
(snare & feet) giving you a 4:3 figure.

The following

Example 3
|
| Here's
the chorus pattern for "Between The Cracks". I'm using
two ride cymbals which alternate right to left, bringing either
hand down for the snare drum accent. |

The
verse of "Ad Nauseum" is an eight measure phrase...
. Repeat the
first two measures three times,

then
play the last two measures to complete the phrase.

From
the solo section of "Walk Thru Fire".

|
|
|
One
phrase from the pre-chorus of "What I Need".

|
|
The
following grooves are from Fuel's debut CD entitled "Sunburn".
|
|
Here's the basic groove to the opening track
"Untitled". The eigth note cymbal pattern was played
on a 20" crash with exception to the dotted quarter played
in the second measure, being an 18" china which was grabbed
and choked immediately after being struck.

Untitled Verse

|
|
Although it's in 4/4, the verse
from "It's Come To This" has an odd feel to it due
to the varying accent line that the snare drum plays.
|
|
|
The bridge of "It's Come
To This" is a half time groove with half notes played
on the ride.

|
|
One
of my favorite tracks from Sunburn is "Song For You".
The intro fill seems to throw a lot of people because it sounds
like it's in odd time, when in actuality it's just a two measure
fill in 4/4, with a pick up note before bar 2.

Mover's
Grooves from Modern Drummer Nov '89
|
Example
1
From the
'GTR' album. This is the groove I played during the chorus
of 'Jekyll & Hyde.'
|
|
|
|
Example
2
Also from
the 'GTR' album, this being the groove from the outro
of 'Toe The Line.' I played the ride cymbal with my left
hand, leaving my right hand free to play toms, gong drum
and cymbal crashes.
|
|
|
|
|
Example
3
Yet another
from 'GTR'. This example is from the verse of 'Imagining'
and it follows the vocal melody with a 7-4-8 feel in quarter
note time. (The crash cymbal notated in the fourth measure
is played on a splash cymbal.)
|
|
|
|
Example
4
The linear
drum break from the song 'Ice 9' off of Joe Satriani's
'Dreaming #11' album.
|
|
|
|
Example
5
One of the
grooves I played under Joe's guitar solo from the song
'Memories', also from 'Dreaming #11'. It's a running16th
note pattern made up of doubles between the kick and snare.
By placing two singles in there, the beat turns itself
around, giving it a 9/8-7/8 feel.
|
|
|
|
Example
6
From the middle section of 'Count Zero' from Stuart Hamm's
album
|
|
'The Kings Of Sleep'.
|
|

|
Example 7
Also
from 'The Kings Of Sleep', this is the groove from
the verse of 'Call Of The Wild.' The hi hat was
played with the left hand, with the exception of
the open 8th note, which was played with the right.
|
|
|
| |
|
The
following is the bridge section of "Echo"
from the live disc of Satriani's "Time Machine".
It's a 5 note sticking, which when payed in double
time, with every other singular left hand hit accented,
gives you the same accent line as the original groove
played with quarter notes.
